The PHOENICIANS ... Entertaining Arizona Audiences since 1943

Phoenicians

logo phoenicians largeIMG 2918The Phoenicians is the primary performing group of the Greater Phoenix Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, and has been an institution in the Phoenix, Arizona (USA) area for over seventy years. Chartered in 1943, they have—like the Phoenix of mythology—risen to become one of the premiere performing organizations in the Society, have captured the title of International Chorus Champion—the highest achievement in the Society—three times, and have earned 14 medals in international competition, making them one of the most decorated choruses in Society history.

The chorus has performed throughout the United States and Canada, and travelled to the United Kingdom in 1999 for a special performance headlining the 25th Jubilee Anniversary of the British Association of Barbershop Singers, one of the Society's affiliate organizations.

The Phoenicians is involved in Harmony Explosion, a program to introduce young men and women to a cappella four-part harmony singing; working with area high school music educators, they have been beneficial in stimulating music programs in schools valley-wide, providing music, direction, coaching and workshops, and have provided funds to send youth quartets to competitions and summer music camps.

Music Team

The Music Team provides the musical leadership of the chapter.  Led by the Director, the Music Team consists of Section Leaders, Choreographers, Coaches, and the Music Librarian.  The Chapter Vice President of Music and Performance serves as a liaison with the Board of Directors.

Far Western District Chorus Champion

The Far Western Disctirct Chorus Champion is determined at the contest held at the District Fall Convention each October.  Choruses from the District are eligible to compete in the Fall Contest by acheiving a qualifying score in their respective Division Contests held each Spring.

The Far Western District Chorus Champion goes on to represent the District at the International Chorus Contest the following summer.  Should they win the International Chorus Contest, they are required to sit out of competition for two years before entering into District contests again.

Chorus at International

The Chorus has represented the Far Western District at the Barbershop Harmony Society International Chorus Contest numerous times, earning medals on fourteen occasions, three of which resulted in a finish in first place with the gold medal and title "International Chorus Champions".
